copyright 2007 wdewitt

Carmei the Sharpei is a beautiful wrinkle
Made from old sacks, she's one loving crinkle
Homeless she is, but not without heart
See her here on my humble art

Ok, I'll stop with the rhymes. But it's kind of addicting, isn't it? This Shar-Pei is a featured dog on Art 4 Critters 'Home for the Holidays' going on now on eBay. A great way to find dog art, cat art, heaven's even mouse art if you please! If you collect animal art, it' a great time to be cruising around eBay. If you want to put a few dollars into the hands of animal charities for the holidays, come on by and look at anything listed by A4C artists for H4TH - or Home for the Holidays.

Please Help Spread the Word to Stop Puppy Mills

The holiday season is fast approaching, and with it, the peak season for puppy sales. Now is the time to spread the word about the prevalence of puppy mills, and ask dog lovers to put them out of business.

Please join the Humane Society of the United States, Nov. 25 to Dec. 2 for Puppy Mill Action Week. They'll have a week of action against puppy mills during the start of the puppy shopping season. We need dog lovers to help spread the word far and wide: don't put cruelty on your shopping list! Together, dog lovers can stop the trade and prevent the suffering of dogs bred under these horrible conditions.

One way to put a stop this kind of cruelty, is to adopt from a pet from one of the many shelters and rescues that are located across our nation. Puppies like little Elena pictured above are desperately seeking forever homes. To learn more about Elena and others like her, please visit our Home for the Holidays website.

Please think twice before ordering a pet over the internet. Here is an excerpt from the Humane Society's page on adopting a puppy:

"You read the ad in the newspaper, and the couple seems so trustworthy, with their decades of experience breeding dogs...

You find a website with photos of green hills and beautiful puppies that insists the "little darlings" and "bundles of joy" will only be sold to "loving families"...
Beware! A cruel, mass dog-breeding facility could hide behind each of these scenarios. Most likely, you've heard about them. The Humane Society of the United States calls them puppy mills, and for good reason.

Puppy mills frequently house dogs in shockingly poor conditions, particularly for the "breeding stock" animals who are caged and continually bred for years, without human companionship, and then killed, abandoned or sold to another "miller" after their fertility wanes. These adult dogs are bred repeatedly to produce litter after litter—without hope of ever becoming part of a family. The result is hundreds of thousands of puppies churned out each year for sale at pet stores, over the Internet, and through newspaper ads. This practice will end only when people stop buying these puppy mill puppies.......................................................

Please don't buy from a pet store, and be very wary of websites and newspaper ads. Above all, don't ever buy a dog if you can't physically visit every area of the home or breeding facility where the dogs are kept. Puppy mills will continue to operate until people stop buying their dogs. We urge you to visit your local shelter, where you are likely to find dozens of healthy, well-socialized puppies and adult dogs—including purebreds—just waiting for that special home—yours."

Rhodesian Ridgeback Portrait, 75% to Help Maasai Mara Vet

African Copper
10" x 8" x0.75"
Acrylics on Gallery Wrapped Canvas
© R.J.Andreae 2007
11-09-2007

The inspiration for this painting of a Rhodesian Ridgeback came from a blog by Asuka Takita that I have been visiting recently. She is an amazing, dedicated veterinarian working in the Maasai Mara. Using her own vehicle to reach remote villages, she and her assistant, Lesingo, have vaccinated 2,550 dogs against rabies and distemper this year. The rough Mara roads have taken their toll on her vehicle. It is now beyond repair and she has no way to reach the other villages to prevent the spread of rabies. She has been with out a reliable vehicle for over a month. Just last month, 2 children, from an area she was to go to, were attacked by rabid dogs. This means most certain death. Did you know that 100 children worldwide die everyday from rabies? That’s over 3,000 children a month dieing from a very preventable disease.

I am pledging 75% from the sale of this painting to go towards a new vehicle for her. I know it is only a drop in the bucket. But like the saying goes, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time”,(Not that I’d recommend eating elephants).

If you would like to learn more about Asuka and donate directly to her, please visit her blog, Mara Mobile Veterinary Unit.

To view and bid on this painting, please click here. ($24.99 starting bid).

Art for Critters has another new animal charity to list for and I am very excited about this one. It's The Bunny Bunch in California, a group that does wonderful work with rescued rabbits. This ACEO kicks off their first appearance as an A4C rescue group. If you would like to find out more about this group check them out here.

They are a no-kill, non-profit group that does a lot of work in the area of education and adoption.

There is something about rabbits that I have always enjoyed painting and drawing. More to come. You always find what's on offer from the artists who make up the Art 4 Critters group by searching 'A4C' on eBay.

Home for the Holidays

Keyword Search: H4TH

The holidays will soon be here. Many of us will be busy baking, having guests over or just snuggling up under a warm blanket watching our favorite holiday movie. The holidays mean home and family for most. But for some, there is no home to go to.

We at Art for Critters have decided to paint and sell works inspired by some very needy animals from our sponsored charities to help raise funds and awareness for them and possibly connect them with a forever home. To learn more about these wonderful critters please click here .
